Dudebro 2020 in Richmond!
Triple Crossing Beer - Downtown Location
113. S. Foushee St.Richmond, VA 23220
So the first entry of this pizza blog is a bit unusual in that I ate it in Richmond, and I got it in a brewery. Every year over the long MLK weekend, I go on an annual dudes' trip dubbed Dudebro. This was year ten, although it was only year six for myself. I was a late addition having married into the group and gaining entry through my brother-in-law, Mickey. I'm lucky in that aspect as I gained nine good friends in my thirties which is no easy feat.
Onto the pizza. It was day three of Dudebro, and I was in typical day-three shape, that is to say, rough. I needed food and needed it badly. We walked from our AirBnB across the James river towards downtown Richmond to the day's first brewery, Triple Crossing Beer. I so desperately wanted this place to have some food...any food. Turns out they pretty much offer one thing: PIZZA!
As it turns out, Triple Crossing has a secondary location elsewhere in Richmond with a full kitchen that preps and wraps pies and sends them over to the downtown location. And at the downtown location, they cook them in a small conveyer belt at a little table off to the side amongst the giant brewing tanks behind the bar.
They offer a Napoli style pie, so I went with my favorite, pepperoni. The pizza came out simply topped with tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, and gloriously cupped pepperoni. I love when the pepperoni cups up when cooked, and with the nice crisp edges and that little pool of spicy oil inside-- good stuff. Anyway, on to my first rating.
- Appearance: 8/10, Great looking crust with leopard spotting, always a welcome sign as it means it came from a REALLY hot oven. I was not expecting this from an electric conveyer belt oven.
- Crust: 7/10, It was shockingly good considering where it came from with a nice crisp outside and pillowy soft inside, a good representation of a classic Napoli style crust.
- Sauce: 7/10, I believe this was a cooked sauce which is not my preferred style, but it was still pretty good. There's nothing too memorable but nothing off-putting either. Honestly, it got kind of buried by the flavor of the pepperoni.
- Cheese: 6/10, The cheese was good but didn't have that fresh squeak I was expecting since it's supposed to be a fresh mozzarella which is usually very springy and has lots of moisture. It was still good, though.
- Cook: 9/10, This was the most surprising to me. I wish I had taken a picture of the oven because you wouldn't believe the pizza that came out like it did actually came from a shiny chrome mini conveyer belt oven. I got to see the red LED display that said it was over 700 degrees which is quite impressive. Pizza came out super hot with a crisp crust with a good amount of char, but it wasn't overcooked or burnt. Just excellent.

Overall: 37/50
Excellent and gratifying first pizza of 2020!
